Synopsis

Ryuuichi and Kotarou arrive and meet everyone at the daycare.

Long Summary

Ryuuichi Kashima and his younger brother Kotarou are taken in by the chairman (Youko Morinomiya) of Morinomiya Academy after their parents die in the plane accident that also killed her son and daughter-in-law. Recognising Ryuuichi's ability to look after Kotarou, she makes him join the Babysitting Club at the academy to look after the children of the school's teachers, in return for caring for the two till Ryuuichi reaches adulthood.

The chairman's secretary (Saikawa) explains that the children's facility could not be covered by the school's budget, so the chairman's son had tried to encourage students to help out via the club, but it was not a popular idea and therefore failed, making Ryuuichi the first member.

The two brothers meet the children at the club and the only staff member, Usaida Yoshihito, who leaves them with the impression of being lazy. Ryuuichi's time is dominated by the children, so Kotarou sits in a corner reading for the day.

Usaida leaves for homes as he will not be paid for working overtime—but secretly admits that he would have stayed if Ryuuichi had asked—as Ryuuichi waits with the children to be picked up by their mothers.

One child, Taka, is instead collected by his older brother, Hayato Kamitani. Hayato reminds Ryuuichi to check up on Kotarou, who is discovered to have a high fever. Worried, Ryuuichi asks Kamitani to tell him the location of the nearest pediatric hospital. Hayato sends Taka to stay with their mother (Shizuka Kamitani) in the staff room and takes Ryuuichi and Kotarou to the hospital on his bike.

The doctor at the hospital reveals that the fever should cease overnight, relieving Ryuuichi. He starts to phone his parents, but cries remembering that they are dead, and that he and Kotarou could only rely on each other. The chairman arrives and consoles him, which cheers Ryuuichi up and the brothers reunite and cry together. Later that night, Ryuuichi realizes that they are not as alone as he first thought.

The next day, the chairman asks her secretary to dispose of some "lackluster" flowers on her desk, saying they will cast doubt on the school's dignity, but changes her mind when he tells her that the brothers picked them for her. At the end of the chapter, Kotarou begins to bond with the other children.
