The Goldfish in the nursery were prize pets the Babysitter Club received at a Matsuri Festival. There are eight in total.
History[]
The children were thrilled upon first receiving the fish at the festival. When Inomata mentioned that such fish tended to die after a few days the children became horrified. The other teenagers were unable to honestly guarantee that the fish would live long, but Usaida mentioned that there might be hope yet. A friend of his managed to raise a prize goldfish he won in elementary school well beyond its usual life expectancy. After Usaida promises to contact him for tips so they could raise the fish in the nursery, the children vowed to take care of their fish so they would live long as well.
After getting an aquarium and other necessary supplies, the club and their associates learned as much as they could so that the fish might live long. Feeling guilty for blurting out the unfortunate fate of most fish, Inomata brought a guidebook on proper care methods to instruct the children.
A day later, Kotaro was enjoying the daycare's new aquarium. He seemed to be able to recognize everybody's fish, which alerted Ryuuichi to the fact that Kotaro didn't identify his own fish. Indeed, there was one fish missing. A search began for the missing fish, but Usaida pointed out that the troublesome cat might have eaten it, to the disbelief of Takuma. Hayato eventually found the fish, dried up and motionless behind a cabinet. It seemed as though Kotaro's fish had died, and the children began crying miserably. Kotaro picked up the fish and passed it over to Ryuu, asking that it be put in water. As Kotaro handed the fish over, a few of his tears dripped down on it. Miraculously, the fish began to twitch and flop in Ryuu's hand. He frantically urged that they fill a bucket with water and place the still-living fish in it. With the club's careful efforts, Kotrao's fish made a full recovery.
The culprit behind the fish's near-death turned out to be the cat after all, and the feline was caught making another attempt to eat one.[1]
The fish were still alive and well by the end of the year. Part of the Babysitter Club's New Year's cleaning was to change the water in their aquarium.[2]
